Experience an unforgettable cycling adventure from the Netherlands into Belgium, following scenic bike paths past historic towns, charming villages, and picturesque canals. Pedal from Amsterdam to Bruges and discover hidden gems you might otherwise miss. The route takes you southwest from Amsterdam, offering countless photo opportunities in beautifully preserved towns such as Gouda, Dordrecht, Willemstad, Zierikzee, Middelburg, Vlissingen (Flushing), Sluis, Damme, and finally Bruges. This predominantly rural tour also winds through stunning nature reserves.
This is a linear route, also available in reverse, starting in Bruges. Beginning in Bruges may offer a better chance of tailwinds, though, of course, the weather is unpredictable! Want to explore more of Belgium? Ask about additional cycling days to Ghent and Antwerp or check out our Belgian Biketours options. Please note that bike rentals may not be available for every start and end location—be sure to check with us for suitable options.
On this trip you can choose from Category A and Category B. Hotels in Category B are more economical, sometimes located further from the center and may have fewer stars. Due to availability, it might be necessary to book a combination of cat A and B hotels.

Itinerary
Arrival in Amsterdam
Show dayYour cycling adventure begins in Amsterdam, a city of enchanting canals, world-class museums, and vibrant streets. Explore the iconic Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, or Anne Frank House, and soak in the lively atmosphere of Dam Square and the charming 17th-century canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arriving early gives you time to wander through tree-lined streets and admire the city’s historic townhouses before your journey begins.
Leaving the bustle of Amsterdam behind, you’ll cycle into the tranquil Groene Hart (Green Heart), a scenic region of low-lying polders, peat meadows, and traditional windmills. Church spires dot the horizon as canals mirror the sky. Your destination, Gouda, has been a lively marketplace for centuries, renowned for its cheese, charming squares, and historic buildings like the 15th-century town hall and the Weighing House (Waag). An evening stroll through the Old Town is the perfect way to soak in its timeless charm.
Today’s route follows the edge of Biesbosch National Park, a rare freshwater tidal wetland teeming with creeks, islands, and birdlife. This dynamic landscape, formed after a great flood in 1421, is a haven for nature lovers. The ride concludes in Willemstad, a beautifully preserved fortified town shaped like a seven-pointed star. Note: Access to Biesbosch depends on the ferry schedule; an alternative route is available when the ferry is not in service.
Entering the province of Zeeland, you’ll experience a land shaped by the elements—wind, water, and vast open spaces. Crossing islands via bridges and ferries, the route weaves through a landscape of rolling dunes, golden sand flats, and patchwork polders. As you near Belgium, historic towns with cobbled streets and centuries-old houses await, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich maritime past.
Step back in time as you explore the winding lanes of Zierikzee, once a thriving trading port. Continuing south, you’ll pass through the picturesque town of Veere, which flourished in the 16th century as a hub for Scottish wool exports. The journey leads to Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland and a former powerhouse of Dutch trade. Wander its historic streets and discover the grandeur of its golden age.
After breakfast, cycle to Vlissingen and take a ferry to Zeelandic Flanders, a region of meandering country roads, pollard willows, and quiet villages. Crossing the Belgian border, you’ll arrive in Damme, a charming town on the banks of the Damse Vaart. Just a short ride away lies Bruges, the "Pearl of Flanders." With its remarkably preserved medieval architecture and rich history as a wool and textile trading hub, this fairytale city is the perfect finale to your journey.

Our self-guided tours
Accommodation is one of the most important parts of each trip that strongly influences the final look of it. We make our best to offer you the best possible accommodation in the prefered category. The hotels we offer are either comfortable small hotels or quite guesthouses both in 3* quality, all of it rather small and with personality than big chain. All the tours have accommodation in or near the town/village centres so you can spend the afternoon and evening after biking exploring the town itself or simply enjoy the peace of the place.
