Come with us and visit the best of the Czech Republic. Over 7 (9) days, explore striking towns on the UNESCO World-heritage list; discover culinary specialities like Bohemian beer, Moravian wine, local plum preserves, and Austrian apricot schnapps. We start in the historical heart and capital of the Czech Republic, Prague with its countless spires and domes, and continue eastwards to the cozy medieval town of Kutná Hora, whose silver mines paid for Columbus' exploration to the New World. Its Gothic and Baroque architecture is crowned by the marvelous St. Barbara church. Lively towns Litomyšl and Brno offer more cultural and UNESCO sites, from the Renaissance italianate chateau of Litomyšl, to Brno's modern architecture of Villa Tugendhadt bulit by Mies van der Rohe. Next, we bike through the biggest english park in Europe – the former Lichtenstein property of Lednice-Valtice where we conclude our days with a glass of fantastic local wine! Last but not least, we pedal over the border into Austria and arrive by train (car) to the elegant Austrian metropolis, Vienna.
Biking from Prague to Vienna has never been easier! Carefully planned tracks along the rivers and through valleys keeps only few hills to climb. Some bikers might say this route is a piece of cake - a Sacher torte of course!
Itinerary
Route A - 10 days / 9 nights, 510 km
This day is dedicated to biking in the beautiful region of the Lednice/Valtice cultural landscape. From Mikulov, we will bike along the former Iron Curtain Road to the royal town of Lednice to explore the fantastic former lands of the Lichtenstein family. Centuries ago, swamps were carefully turned into parks and ponds connecting the stunning chateaux of Lednice and Valtice while hiding numerous smaller structures among woods and streams.
Finally in Austria we will bike through the Herrnbaumgarten Village, famous for its poetic museum of nonsense, all the way to the wine museum in Poysdorf, where you will have a chance to complete your weeks' wine "education"! Then we will pass through Wilfersdorf with its chateaux.
We will conclude our day in Mistelbach, from where bikers on shorter option will take a train/car transfer to Vienna.
For most of our day's journey south we can follow the river Svratka which makes for both a gentle ride and easy navigation. Our first and very pleasant stop will be Rajhrad with its fantastic 11th-century monastery. Passing Zidlochovice and its chateau, we pedal into the real heart of Moravia, full of vineyards and wine cellars. After crossing the huge Nové Mlýny dam, we can start wine tasting, or perhaps learning something about the ancient history of the area and the iconic Stone-Age statue of the Venus of Vestonice. We can then choose to climb the Pálava Hill or bike around it - both routes are lined with family wine cellars - to arrive at a hidden gem, the town of Mikulov.
On a pleasant and easy bike trail we'll roll along the river to the spa town of Poděbrady and continue to the old royal town of Kolín with its ornate Renaissance synagogue. From Kolin we will leave the Elbe River and bike to one of the UNESCO Heritage sites on our "to do list" – the old silver mining capital, Kutná Hora. Through the Middle Ages it was one of the most important towns in the kingdom, extremely rich due to its silver coin mint and location on trades routes. Thanks to all this we can relax in the cozy old town comprised of fascinating Medieval and Baroque structures. Crowning it all is the stunning St Barbara's church – a real jewel of Gothic architecture!
Before we leave Kutná Hora we will visit an extraordinary venue – the Sedlec ossuary whose decorations were created using the bones of more than 30 000 dead people, making it a curious and macabre exhibition. Just before we return to the Elbe, we can visit a lovely Classical-style chateau, Kačina. Rejoining the river we pedal to the Kladruby national stud farm, which has produced exceptional horses since the 16th century. In the afternoon we'll bike along the Buňkov lake, taking a pause to relax on the beach or even swim . Today's last stop is the medieval town of Pardubice. A charming, quiet old town with a nice chateau and old lanes, but home of the SEMTEX plastic explosive as well. For those looking for something sweet - you've found it! - Pardubice is the Czech capital of traditional gingerbread.
Arrival to Prague - not included in tour price!
Show dayThis day is yours to explore the "Paris of the Central Europe,", relax, or have a unique Prague-by-bike tour (see more in our Prague-by-bike section). Do not hesitate to ask us for this extra tour – it is our clients favorite! If time is not your worst enemy, we do propose you stay in Prague more days to fully explore its beauty and hidden corners. Feel free to ask us about more nights or other attractions!
Hotels: Night in Prague is not included as most of our guests prefer to stay more nights. We recommend to use one of our standard partner hotels (3/4/5* Standard) as our route description, GPS files, maps etc. starts from there. If you decide to book your own hotel additional 20 € administration fee will apply.
Please note we require hotel with 24/7 reception + bike storage room. We do not accept Air B&B accommodation and it will be your responsibility on day 1 to find way by bike to our starting point.
The first day of our tour we leave Prague by a bit of unusual way – part of the route goes right on the top of a subway tunnel! We bike to the north east to get to the fertile Polabí region. First stop on the way is the old town of Čelákovice and then Přerov nad Labem with the oldest village culture museum in Europe. From here on you can choose one of the 2 options. Basically left or right river bank. The right bank offers a nice natural track along mostly unpaved roads. The left bank takes you more on small side roads all decently paved. Moreover, on a hot day you can stop for a swim in a local lake! By the end of the day you get to the old royal town of Nymburk. Nice old town with city walls connected with the Elbe. When here, do go and taste the lokal Postřižiny beer to comemorate the czech writer Bohumil Hrabal who was born and grew up in the local brewery!
The roads rise and fall as we leave the Elbe for good, but they are full of beautiful sights. First we can visit or just enjoy the view of the mighty castle Kunětická Hora. After that we join a smaller river, Loučná, following it to the village of Vraclav and its memorial to the Vršovec noble family, slaughtered here by the royals in the 12th century. Next stop is the town of Vysoké Mýto; today the hub of bus construction, its much longer history is displayed by a beautiful town square and nicely preserved city gates. Today's lodgings are in the UNESCO protected town of Litomyšl, home of a fantastic Renaissance chateau with stunning gardens. Litomyšl is also the birthplace of the renowned composer Bedřich Smetana, a man celebrated every year with a classical music festival - a highlight of the Czech cultural calendar.
Todays ride take us through little villages like Vendolí to Svitavy – a place connected with Oskar Schindler. From here w follow the Svitava river through Březová to Letovice. Here we turn to Boskovice. A lovely gem hidden at the edge of Moravian Karst. Once a home to mighty lords of Boskovice the town has a large chateau and castle plus a lovely square. Enjoy the relax!
Vienna
Show dayWe highly recommend you take time to tour this magnificent city, the former capital of the Habsburg Empire and a town of high aesthetic and gastronomic culture.
Last missing part of Prague-Vienna whole way biking tour will guide us through rolling landscape with many wind power plants on the horizon. We will be following the
EuroVelo 6 bike trail partly built on ancient steam railroad tracks. We will end our day at Vienna - former capital of the Habsburg Monarchy, town of the waltz and opera.
This day we follow again the Svitava river through Blansko and Adamov with Moravian Karst views to the lively Moravian capital. The town is full of lovely old corners, lively squares all dominated by a once scary prison in Špilberg castle and fragile gothic cathedral of st Peter. Other sites include the the UNESCO-protected Villa Tugendhat.

Sites include the beautiful cathedral and the UNESCO-protected Villa Tugendhat. If biking green countryside is your preference, follow the river Loučná through some tiny villages and take a little detour to the charming town of Polička. It has the best-preserved medieval walls in the Czech Republic and a very good brewery. Continue biking to Březová nad Svitavou, where you'll catch the train to Brno to enjoy your evening.

Accommodation is one of the most important parts of each trip that strongly influences the final look of it. We make our best to offer you the best possible accommodation in the prefered category. The hotels we offer are either comfortable small hotels or quite guesthouses both in 3* quality, all of it rather small and with personality than big chain.
